7050 Aluminum is similar to the other popular 7000 series aluminum alloy 7075, however it is less quench sensitive. This allows the alloy to maintain strength properties over time better than other high strength alloys, especially in thick sections. 7050 T7451 also displays better corrosion resistance, exfoliation resistance, and toughness than standard high strength alloys making it very popular in the aerospace industry where it is used for bulkheads, fuselages, and wing skins.

7075 alloy is “aircraft grade” because it exhibits excellent mechanical properties. It has good ductility, toughness, fatigue resistance, and is one of the strongest aluminum alloy’s available, comparable to steel. Due to microsegregation, 7075 can become brittle over time in harsh environments and the mechanical properties may decrease in thicker sections but it will show better corrosion resistance than 2024 alloy. Due to the fatigue resistance and strength of 7075 it is commonly used in aircraft, marine, and automotive structural parts along with other uses where strength is critical such as firearms, rock climbing equipment, bicycle frames, and glider frames.

Also known as “free machining brass.” The presence of lead in the alloy creates a highly machinable material that can easily be cut and shaped into whatever you need. It is not so good, however, at forming operations.

Brass 385 and 280 are alloys that both exhibit a gold attractive color. 385 is more machinable and corrosion resistant 280, however, 280 is stronger and harder than 385.

Along with c380, this alloy is also known as “architectural bronze.” That is a bit of a misnomer though, as this is brass, not bronze. It polishes up to a great finish, resists corrosion in non-marine environments well, and it also machines comparably well to c360. It is typically used in architectural applications and ornamental hardware.

Also known as “naval brass” because it is regularly used in marine environments. It has an extremely high corrosion resistance, good strength, fair machinability, and excellent resistance to zincification. It is typically used in marine hardwear, wearplates, bushings, fasteners, condenser tubes, and, true fact, cannons.

Like c464, this is known as “naval brass” because it is regularly used in marine environments. It has an extremely high corrosion resistance, good strength, and excellent resistance to zincification. However, there is better machinability due to higher lead content than c464. This alloy is typically used in marine hardwear, wearplates, bushings, fasteners, condenser tubes, and, true fact, cannons.

A commonly used lower carbon steel with a wide range of applications due to the typical benefits of steel. Typically used in machinery parts, die forging, hot upsetting, gears, crankshafts, shafts, axles, bolts, studs, pinions, casters, and support plates.

1075 Spring Steel has a higher carbon content than that of standard steel with a hardness range of 44-47 HRC. This material is softer and than 1095, making it faster to sharpen and easier to form.

1095 Spring Steel has a higher carbon content than that of standard steel with a hardness range of 48-51 HRC. This hardness allows for more spring back and better edge retention in applications where stress is continuous.

Also called “stressproof,” this alloy has excellent strength and hardness, and is specifically treated to relieve stresses in the metal created during the manufacturing process. This means that the bar is less prone to warping after it is machined or heat treated. Typically used in nuts, bolts, arbors, gears, pinions, piston rods, sleeves, shafts, and screws.

The addition of lead and manganese to this steel increases hardenability and machinability. Typically used when case hardening is needed, such as in medium duty shafts, studs, pins, and universal joints.

This alloy has lead added to it in order to increase machinability, and it also means it can be bent, riveted, or crimped. It is typically used in high-speed screw machine products and other high-speed machines.

The most common low-carbon structural steel in the world, A36 Hot Roll Steel is strong, heavy, ductile, and cheap. It is exceptionally easily to weld and has good machinability properties. It is typically used for general structural purposes such as bridges and buildings.

A common low-carbon steel, there’s not a lot to say about this material. It’s typically used in home appliances, furniture, and automotive applications.
